Pre-Columbian greenstone mask (RG50) has been authenticated by Stoetzer, Inc. of Miami.(PLEASE SEARCH FOR STOETZER INC,YOU WILL FIND THIS COMPANY IS VERY PRESTIGIOUS,HELPING MUSEUM,PRIVATE COLLECTORS,FOUNDATIONS,EVEN THE BIGGEST AUCTION COMPANIES LIKE SOTHEBY'S & CHRISTIE'S,THE MEXICAN PAVILION AT DISNEY EPCOT ETC). As is frequently found with ancient stone relics in an effort to restore them to their original appearance, Stoetzer reports that the surface of the mask has undergone high speed buffing in more recent years, and also states that the surface of the mask still shows the residual signs of pecking and use of ancient tools.
Dated to the classic Teotihuacan period in Mexico, c.300-700AD, the dark greenish-black stone appears to be a massive form of serpentine, confirmed with a measured specific gravity of 2.63. In excellent condition with a small chip on the back of the left ear, the mask has biconical, bow-drilled drilled holes in the upper corners along the sides of the forehead that were used for suspension, and at the base of the ears where ear spools were once attached. The inset eyes and mouth were typically decorated with shell or colored stone. This fine piece could easily act as the focal point of a collection. It comes with a small display card, a map of Mexico on which is high-lighted the site of Teotihuacan (the monumental site known to the Aztecs as the ‘City of the Gods’), and the original Stoetzer authentication certificate.
